Roots & Shoots South Africa: Gardens of Hope Driving Food Security and Climate Action

Hope in action starts with strong partnerships. Since 2022, DP World has helped Roots & Shoots expand its reach through small internal grants that fuel big ideas — restoring habitats, promoting education, and building resilient communities.

Roots & Shoots South Africa is partnering with small-scale farmers to support local agriculture and share indigenous knowledge

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots South Africa is one of the current small grant recipients creating big impact. Gardens of Hope is helping students create food gardens while learning about conservation and climate change.

Roots & Shoots South Africa is partnering locally with small-scale farmers in KaNyamazane, Mpumalanga to support local agriculture and share indigenous knowledge. These community farms thrive thanks to the skills of elders who are eager to pass on their knowledge to younger generations.

Recent highlights:

• Donated tools and supplies chosen by farmers — watering cans, forks, and organic fertilizer
• Collaborated with student volunteers from the University of Mpumalanga
• Preparing for farmers to teach a Roots & Shoots primary school group about sustainable food gardening

Aligned with #SDGs:

• SDG 2 – Zero Hunger
• SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
• SDG 4 – Quality Education
• SDG 8 – Decent Work & Economic Growth
• SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
• SDG 13 – Climate Action
• SDG 15 – Life on Land
