Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace

“With the Peace Doves, we remind everyone of the truth they sometimes forget—that peace is possible. We celebrate all that is free and noble in the human spirit. And we celebrate all that so many people have done throughout the year—and will do next year—to create a better world for all,” said Dr. Goodall.

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Day of Peace

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE was first appointed as a UN Messenger of Peace in a ceremony at the United Nations in September 2002 by then Secretary General Kofi Annan. Reappointed by Secretary General Ban ki Moon and Secretary General Antonio Guterres she remained in this important role for the rest of her life. The designated United Nations Day of Peace is 2lst September. Dr. Goodall established Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace in 2004 in honour of the UN Day of Peace and to encourage Roots & Shoots members and other interested individuals to promote peace in their communities and around the globe. In addition to participating in community activities to share culture and break down the barriers between us, Roots & Shoots members, families and friends craft Giant Peace Dove Puppets from reused materials them in their neighborhoods to symbolise their commitment to peace. Roots & Shoots day may be held on any day around 2lst September each year to allow maximum local participation.

The 2026 UN theme “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day”

This theme reminds us that peace is not only shaped by governments or institutions. Peace is something we create in our schools, families, communities and everyday interactions. This year’s theme celebrates the “everyday architects of peace” who contribute to a safer, more just and more compassionate world through their daily actions. [un.org]

What does peace mean in your community?

The answer may look different from one community to another. For some groups, peace may mean inclusion, kindness and stronger relationships. For others it may mean caring for animals, restoring nature, supporting vulnerable people, building understanding across cultures, or creating opportunities for young people to be heard.

Roots & Shoots encourage groups to come together to discuss, explore and express what peace means in their local context, and then take action that helps strengthen peace for: Animals, People, The Environment.

Creative expression has always been an important part of Roots & Shoots Peace Day celebrations. This year groups are encouraged to use art, music, dance, poetry, storytelling, photography, discussion, performance or other creative forms to share their vision of peace and inspire others. Groups may also choose to participate in the long-standing Roots & Shoots tradition of creating Peace Doves, including the Giant Peace Dove Puppets. These doves have flown in communities around the world as symbols of hope, unity and the shared desire for a more peaceful future.
