Roots & Shoots USA – continuing Dr. Jane’s legacy

Roots & Shoots is Dr. Jane Goodall’s living legacy — a global movement built on her belief that young people have the power to shape the world around them. Across the United States, this vision is alive and thriving. From climate summits to wildlife conservation, youth-led initiatives are proving that compassion, innovation, and collective action can transform communities.

Youth Climate Summits

At the end of last year, three extraordinary members of the Roots & Shoots Youth Council USA secured grants to organise climate summits in their home states.

  • New Jersey: Carolyn H rallied students to explore local recycling guidelines and address concerns around nearby construction proposals. Then, they celebrated creative upcycling workshops, crafting tie-dyed bags and shirts, jewellery, and magazine collages.
  • New York: Oona S. hosted her second annual Westchester Youth Climate Summit, drawing around 100 students from over 25 high schools. Attendees engaged in the history of climate change, a youth activist panel discussion, and a workshop on climate adaptation and mitigation.
  • Connecticut: Lauren R. launched her first summit at the Bruce Museum, welcoming hundreds to informative and entertaining stations—from DIY seed bombs and binocular-making to birdwatching and recycling games.

Throughout their journeys, Carolyn H., Oona S., and Lauren R. worked together closely, sharing ideas and solutions. Their collective efforts concluded with a virtual panel, celebrating their achievements and paving the way for future climate events.

Tampa Bay: Comfort for Kittens, One Blanket at a Time

The team of staff and volunteers at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay cares for countless domesticated pets waiting for their fur-ever homes. With 200 kitten blankets changed daily, the need for comfort is constant.
To help, middle schoolers from Critter Careers Camp teamed up with Roots & Shoots and made 20 cosy, no-sew blankets. Under the guidance of Roots & Shoots Tampa Bay Basecamp Coordinator Bonnie Eaton, the worked hard to give these kittens something soft to snuggle.

Jeremiah Steen: A Force for Environmental Justice

At just 24 years old, Jeremiah Steen is a trailblazer for environmental justice and youth empowerment. Jeremiah’s journey began in Detroit, Michigan, where he witnessed first-hand how environmental and economic issues disproportionately impact marginalized communities.
In 2018, at age 17, Jeremiah received a Roots & Shoots fellowship and launched the Steen Foundation. Today, the nonprofit has distributed over $1 million in grants, driven policy reform across the Midwest, and empowered hundreds of young people to lead environmental justice projects in their communities.

Salem, Oregon: Saving the Western Bluebird

In Salem, Oregon, a Roots & Shoots group is taking action to protect the threatened Western Bluebird. As housing developments encroach on natural habitats, these young conservationists are building and monitoring nesting boxes to provide safe homes for the birds.
Their project included:

  • Researching bluebird behaviors and seasonal movements
  • Constructing nesting boxes
  • Monitoring and recording bird activity
  • Advocating for the preservation of mature trees

The result? Bluebirds have already been spotted checking out their new homes!

From climate summits to wildlife conservation, from animal shelters to nesting boxes, Roots & Shoots USA is proving that every project can make a difference.
“The question is not whether we can make a difference,” Dr. Jane once said. “It’s whether we will.”
Roots & Shoots USA’s answer is clear: Yes, we will.
