Today is Endangered Species Day, a day to celebrate and protect the biodiversity that makes our planet unique. Across the globe, Roots & Shoots projects are empowering young people to take action for wildlife and habitats at risk.

Empowering Youth to Safeguard Wildlife

In the Czech Republic, students from the Roots & Shoots group at IMSP Prague are leading the way with their Endangered Animal Poster Project. Focused on protecting Czechia’s most endangered bird, the Little Owl, their initiative also highlights other critically endangered species, such as the Javan rhino and pangolin, to raise awareness about the threats facing global wildlife.

The students researched and developed practical guidelines to help homeowners secure buildings, wells, and pipes, preventing injuries to vulnerable birds like the Little Owl. Their educational campaign extended beyond the classroom, engaging peers and the wider community to demonstrate how small changes can have a significant impact.

To further their efforts, the group organised a fundraiser for WWF, turning awareness into tangible support for wildlife conservation. Their project serves as a powerful example of how youth-led action can drive meaningful change for biodiversity.

Together, we can ensure that no species is left behind. Every creature, big or small, plays a vital role in our world.
