Roots & Shoots: Youth-Led Climate Action Around the World

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face today, but across the globe, Roots & Shoots groups are not waiting for solutions, they’re creating them. As a global network of youth-led initiatives, Roots & Shoots empowers people to take action, educate their communities, and inspire a sustainable future. Here’s how these changemakers are turning ideas into impact:

Educate – Knowledge is Power
Netherlands

Recognising the urgent need to raise awareness about climate change, Roots & Shoots Netherlands developed interactive educational materials to help people understand climate change’s causes, impacts, and solutions — because when people know better, they do better!

Reduce Waste – Turning Trash into Treasure
Japan

At Yokohama International School, students took a closer look at waste in their school cafeteria last year and noticed paper cartons with aluminum lining were being tossed as burnable waste. They joined the Tetra Pak Bell Mark Programme, setting up collection boxes and posters to promote recycling. For every kilogram of cartons collected, they earned points to buy essentials for a local children’s welfare facility.

Austria

Roots & Shoots Austria turned waste reduction into a fun challenge. Each week, new tasks were posted on the school’s “Globe” board, encouraging students to think creatively about recycling and upcycling. The impact spread beyond the classroom, with families adopting more sustainable habits at home. Students encouraged more conscious consumption , showing their communities how to reduce their environmental impact.

Restore Ecosystems: Planting Hope
Tanzania

In Zanzibar, Roots & Shoots joined local communities to plant mangroves in Unguja Ukuu. Mangroves protect coastlines from erosion, support marine life, and help fight climate change. These efforts are part of a larger movement to restore Zanzibar’s coastal ecosystems and empower women as leaders in conservation.

Ecuador

After devastating forest fires in Quito in 2024, a group of young people formed Quito Verde to reforest the city and reduce the long-term impacts of climate-related disasters. Their mission: regenerate native flora, support the return of local wildlife, and restore the ecological balance in affected areas. By planting trees and restoring ecosystems, they’re turning tragedy into a greener future.

From classrooms to coastlines, Roots & Shoots groups are proving that no action is too small—and every effort counts in the fight for our planet.
