International Day for Biological Diversity 2023

International Day for Biological diversity is celebrated globally on 22 May to increase undestanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Dr. Jane Goodall has shared her message for International Biodiversity Day. Some of the key messages include how she has seen the decline of garden birds and insects at her home in her lifetime, and how climate change is increasingly triggering loss of biodiversity.

Despite all the challenges our environment faces, Dr. Jane shares some of her reasons of hope, including the resilience of nature, and the energy and commitment of young people to take positive action.

In Rwanda, Roots & Shoots groups at a primary school celebrated the day by drawing actions that could be taken to protect biodiversity in their community, linking to the theme of  “From agreement to action”

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Roots & Shoots team created community awareness about the consequences of war on biodiversity.

If you would like to learn more biodiversity, or explore your local biodiversity through a bioblitz, download our Biodiversity Information Booklet from our resources. Contact your local Roots & Shoots office to take further action as part of our community of change makers.
