Roots & Shoots Rwanda Expands Conservation Education Near Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Roots & Shoots Rwanda – Enhancing Eastern Chimpanzee’s Habitat Protection through Conservation Awareness in Gishwati-Mukura National Park’s Neighbouring Schools

At Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, we believe that creating a better world for people, animals, and the environment requires more than passion — it requires action, and strong and lasting partnerships.

That’s why we are so proud of our ongoing collaboration with DP World.  Since 2022 Jane Goodall Institute Global has managed small internal grants that help Roots & Shoots offices and multinational teams expand their reach and impact, made possible by DP World.

This support  strengthened Roots & Shoots Rwanda by:

  • Establishing three new school clubs with over 150 student members and engaging seven new volunteers and six club mentors, bringing conservation education to a new area near Gishwati-Mukura National Park, significantly increasing awareness and participation in this area.
  • Distributing new educational materials.
  • Implementing workshops focused on chimpanzee conservation, including study tours.
  • Planting 460 trees — including agroforestry, fruit, and native species.
  • Reaching an estimated 2,100 school community members and 8,400 village residents indirectly through workshops.
  • Signing a partnership agreement with the Rwanda Development Board to strengthen conservation collaboration

When R&S Rwanda expanded to the Gishwati-Mukura area, the response from students, teachers, and community members was overwhelmingly positive. Many participants had never heard Dr. Jane Goodall’s story before, and her journey sparked a deep emotional connection and a shared sense of purpose. By combining youth empowerment, community engagement, and habitat protection, this project contributes directly to several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals including quality education (SDG 4), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), climate action (SDG 13), and life on land (SDG 15).
