Roots & Shoots Rwanda: Vulture Awareness Campaign Highlights Urgent Conservation Needs

Roots & Shoots Rwanda – Raising Awareness for Vulture Conservation

Protecting Nature’s Cleanup Crew

Roots & Shoots volunteers Fionah and Genereuse, supported by Roots & Shoots Rwanda and in partnership with the Rwanda Animal Welfare Organization (RAWO), hosted a Vultures Day Awareness Campaign at Gataraga Market in Rwanda’s Northern Province. The event marked International Vulture Awareness Day, shining a spotlight on the critical role vultures play in maintaining a healthy environment.

Held near the Gataraga abattoir—a common habitat for Hooded Vultures—the campaign ran under the theme:
“Vultures are friends of the environment – they protect our health and help stop the spread of disease. Let’s protect vultures to protect life.”

Why Vultures Matter

Vultures are nature’s cleanup crew. By consuming dead animals, they prevent the spread of disease and reduce contamination of water and soil. During the event, interactive sessions and Q&A discussions helped the local community understand why protecting these birds is essential for both human and environmental health.

Research shared during the campaign revealed a concerning trend: Rwanda’s vulture population has declined dramatically—from 3,000 individuals in 1960 to just 280 in 2022, across five remaining species. This alarming drop underscores the urgent need for conservation action.

A Call to Action

The event concluded with a united message:
Protect vultures to protect life and safeguard our environment for future generations.

Through partnerships and grassroots efforts like this campaign, Roots & Shoots Rwanda continues to inspire communities to take action for wildlife and ecosystems.
