Recently, Roots & Shoots clubs in Sierra Leone demonstrated the power of youth-led action, embodying and continuing the vision of Dr. Jane Goodall. Their efforts made a real difference across their communities.
The day started with a birdwatching expedition at Mortormeh, a site tragically affected by the 2017 mudslide. This activity served as both a tribute to those lost and a contribution to biodiversity monitoring, raising awareness about the importance of conservation.
Following the expedition, members split into two teams for community cleanups. One team focused on Regent, improving public health by removing waste, while the other worked at EducAid, creating a cleaner learning environment and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among students.
The highlight of the day was a large-scale tree planting event at Western Area Peninsula National Park. Roots & Shoots members collaborated with Tacugama, UNDP Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Tourism & Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Global Environment Facility. Together, they planted 3,000 trees, supporting reforestation, climate resilience, and the restoration of wildlife habitats.
A huge thank you to all members and partners for their dedication. Through every bird counted, every piece of litter removed, and every tree planted, Roots & Shoots Sierra Leone continues to carry forward Dr. Jane Goodall’s message of hope, compassion, and action.
