Roots & Shoots Tanzania Empowers Youth Through Sustainable Beekeeping in Kigoma Region

Roots & Shoots Tanzania – Kigoma Region Beekeeping Community Project 

Hope in action starts with strong partnerships. Since 2022, DP World has helped Roots & Shoots expand its reach through small grants that fuel big ideas — restoring habitats, promoting education, and building resilient communities.

Thanks to this support from DP World, Roots & Shoots Tanzania has expanded its reach through the Kigoma Region Beekeeping Community Project. The partnership between JGIG and DP World aims to empower the next generation to take action for a more sustainable future by supporting the growth of Roots & Shoots programmes worldwide.

The grant has enabled Roots & Shoots Tanzania to: 

  • Revitalise 36 Roots & Shoots groups in Nsimbo District, reactivated through sustainable beekeeping training, awareness campaigns, and the distribution of modern beehives. 
  • Transition to digital registration of Roots & Shoots groups via the Survey123 Mobile App, replacing paper systems and improving visibility across the network. 
  • Integrate sustainable beekeeping into school programmes, giving students practical skills in hive management and environmental care. 
  • Deliver 36 training sessions delivered across local schools, supported by local mentors and teachers. 
  • Develop and share six educational resources covering composting, land rights, biodiversity, sustainable farming, and youth leadership.

The project targeted vulnerable youth—particularly refugees and marginalised young people at high risk of school dropout due to displacement and poverty. A key result is that nearly 55% of households in the settlements are now practising beekeeping as a means of livelihood. 

By combining youth empowerment with biodiversity conservation, the project has become a catalyst for change, revitalising youth movements and restoring motivation to continue education and pursue sustainable livelihoods. It demonstrates how grassroots action can break cycles of poverty and marginalisation, while contributing to global goals like quality education, economic growth, climate action, and life on land.
