Roots & Shoots Zambia Group “Sprouts” Taking Action for Pangolins and Sustainability

A new Roots & Shoots group of 2nd and 3rd graders at the American International School of Lusaka, called “Sprouts”, began in September 2025 and meets weekly for one hour.

After using the Roots & Shoots method of Community Mapping, Sprouts chose to focus on raising awareness, providing education, and fundraising to help save the pangolin — the most trafficked animal in the world. Their work reflects the Roots & Shoots #GenWild campaign, which aims to inspire and educate young people to protect wildlife and speak up for animals everywhere.

To deepen their understanding of pangolins and the threats they face, the group partnered with Wildlife Crime Protection (WCP), an NGO dedicated to preserving Zambia’s wildlife and natural heritage. WCP supports conservation through community engagement and government partnerships, raising awareness about animal trafficking and the illegal bushmeat trade.

Creative Actions by Sprouts:

  • School Awareness Skit: Sprouts are developing a skit for the Primary School, using costumes made from recyclable paper. The scripts are inspired by questions collected from posters placed around the school.
  • Pangolin Facts Challenge: Students who can recite five pangolin facts may have their thumbnail painted brown, symbolising support for pangolins and their keratin scales.
  • Fundraising T-Shirt Design: Sprouts are creating a pangolin T-shirt design, with part of the proceeds supporting WCP Pangolin Rehabilitation.
  • #NoWasteNovember Seed Bank: Students are encouraged to save used food containers to create a “seed bank” in the library. Seeds from food scraps (e.g., oranges, apples, cucumbers) can be contributed and taken home to plant in gardens — reducing food waste and promoting sustainability.

Sprouts are learning, acting, and inspiring change in Lusaka — raising awareness for pangolins and planting sustainability, one seed at a time!
