Honouring Dr. Jane Goodall’s Legacy Through Action

As we honour the life and impact of Dr. Jane Goodall, we celebrate the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind — a legacy of hope, compassion, and action.
For many, grief becomes a path to purpose. Continuing her work, living her values, and sharing her message helps us heal — and supports our work in making the world a better place.
Today, we continue her work by launching the Roots & Shoots Global Learning Hub — a space to learn more about how to take action for animals, people, and the environment.

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots – continuing Dr. Jane’s legacy

Dr. Jane Goodall’s legacy lives on in the people whose lives she touched, who were filled with hope by her messages, and inspired to take action to protect wildlife and their habitat — the natural world. Dr. Jane believed in the power of young people to make a positive difference. In 1991, she launched her youth program, Roots & Shoots. Now active in 75 countries and counting, Roots & Shoots empowers young people to live as compassionate citizens. Jane often said that in addition to her chimpanzee research, she wanted to be remembered for Roots & Shoots.

Today and every day, we are reminded of her words: “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Dr. Jane Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, was a remarkable example of courage and conviction, working tirelessly throughout her life to raise awareness about threats to wildlife, promote conservation, and inspire a more harmonious, sustainable relationship between people, animals and the natural world. She passed away on October 1st, 2025. For some children and young people dealing with her loss may be upsetting and difficult. We have prepared this information with input from Dr. Mehmet Cevdet Tosyalı, MD with the goal of helping children and young people and the adults working with them through this grief process. Dr. Tosyalı is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who has been in practice for more than 30 years, has held teaching positions at Columbia University, New York University, and Albert Einstein University. He is currently in practice in New York City. He is a long term friend, supporter of Roots & Shoots.
