At Unity Concord International School (UCIS) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the Roots & Shoots Unity Concord International School group is showing how impactful environmental action can start at a very young age. The Grade 2 students recently completed their Recycling & River Cleanup Project—an inspiring example of youth-led stewardship for people, animals and the environment.
The project began in the classroom, where the Roots & Shoots UCIS Thailand group explored recycling through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With guidance from their teachers, the students learned how proper waste management supports sustainable consumption, protects ecosystems and contributes to climate action.
By linking everyday habits to global environmental challenges, the young learners discovered how simple actions—like sorting recyclables or reducing waste—can create long-term positive impact.
The highlight of the project came when the students put their learning into action. Together, the Roots & Shoots UCIS Thailand group visited the banks of the Ping River to remove litter and help restore the local environment. Equipped with gloves, bags and determination, they worked as a team to clear waste that harms wildlife and pollutes waterways.
Seeing the direct effects of pollution helped them understand the importance of caring for natural spaces and motivated them to keep taking action beyond the classroom.

Throughout the project, the students demonstrated impressive responsibility, leadership and teamwork. Their commitment reflects the heart of the Roots & Shoots philosophy: that every individual—no matter their age—can make a meaningful difference.
The Roots & Shoots team, along with UCIS teachers and staff, are incredibly proud of the group’s dedication. Their enthusiasm shows that real change often begins with the youngest voices.
