Grade 5 students at Unity Concord International School in Thailand are transforming waste into opportunity! Through their Roots & Shoots group, these young changemakers are learning how small actions can make a big difference for the planet combining composting and tech.
The students explored the art of composting and discovered why it’s essential for reducing waste and creating healthier soil. Their compost now enriches the school’s food gardens, helping students learn about growing food sustainably.
But they didn’t stop at composting! Using Makey Makey and Scratch, the students designed interactive games that teach younger learners about composting in a fun and engaging way. This creative approach combines sustainability education with hands-on technology.
One student shared an important insight:
“We still have work to do on reducing snack packaging and food waste in the cafeteria.”
This reflection shows how the project is sparking deeper conversations about everyday habits and their impact on the environment.
The compost created by the students is now nourishing the school’s food gardens. These gardens provide a living classroom where students learn about sustainable agriculture and the importance of healthy ecosystems.
This project is a powerful example of how creativity and technology can drive sustainability education. By turning waste into opportunity, these students are proving that young people can lead the way toward a greener future.
