Youth Action in Japan, Belgium and Chile: Protecting Animals, Biodiversity and Natural Spaces

Roots & Shoots youth projects for animals, people and the environment!

Across the world, Roots & Shoots members are showing how small actions can grow into meaningful change. These three stories—from Japan, Belgium and Chile—highlight how young people are using creativity, compassion and teamwork to protect animals, support biodiversity and strengthen their connection with nature.

Japan: Creativity Supporting Animal Rescue

In Shimonoseki, Japan, the Roots & Shoots group First Step Shimonoseki transformed a simple idea into real impact for rescued cats and dogs. The students handcrafted candles and sold them at local flea markets, raising 33,070 yen through both sales and donations.
These funds were used to cover vital expenses such as food, veterinary care and safe shelter for animals in need. Beyond fundraising, the young participants volunteered at local adoption events, helping rescued animals connect with potential new families and supporting local rescue groups.
Through their creativity and dedication, they not only provided practical support but also raised awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of animal welfare within their community.

Belgium: Building Biodiversity and Confidence Through Nature Education

Roots & Shoots Belgium collaborated with Toekomst Atelier de l’Avenir (TADA) to bring hands-on environmental education to 175 children from less‑privileged backgrounds. Every Saturday, participants joined workshops covering topics such as forests, chimpanzees, sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals.
These sessions offered more than environmental knowledge—they provided a positive space for children to build curiosity, resilience and confidence while exploring the natural world.
One highlight of the program was the construction of insect hotels. Children placed these structures in their homes or community spaces, helping support local biodiversity while taking pride in a personal contribution to their environment.
Through learning and doing, the project fostered environmental awareness and empowered children to see themselves as active protectors of nature.

Chile: Community Conservation at the Quirilluca Cliffs

In Chile, the Roots & Shoots project “Let’s Throw a Booby – Cliffs of Quirilluca” brought the community together to celebrate and protect a unique natural landscape. Recognized for its ecological and cultural value, the Quirilluca Cliffs became a focal point for environmental education and collective action.
The community worked with Roots & Shoots Chile to install artistic and informational signs along the trails. These signs help visitors understand the cliffs’ importance, guide them through the area and encourage respectful and responsible behavior to prevent environmental harm.
Through observation, reflection and collaboration, the project strengthened the community’s relationship with their natural surroundings and reinforced local stewardship. Their work ensures that the cliffs remain a safeguarded natural treasure for generations to come.
